Ascot stages Qatar Racing British Champions Day on Saturday 17 October 2026. The seven-race card includes five Group 1 contests and offers a stated GBP 4.35 million in total prize money.

The declared six-runner Champion Stakes is scheduled for 16:00 British local time over approximately 2,000 metres: Ombudsman (stall 2, William Buick), Calandagan (4, Christophe Soumillon), Bay City Roller (5, Oisin Murphy), Almaqam (1, Kieran Shoemark), Devil’s Advocate (6, Robert Havlin) and Constitution River (3, Ryan Moore). These are pre-race declarations, not finishing positions.

Calandagan returns as defending champion after beating Ombudsman and Almaqam in the 2025 renewal. Bay City Roller arrives only 13 days after finishing second in the Arc and now faces a shorter trip. Ombudsman has four Group 1 wins, including this year’s Dubai Turf and Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. Those verified records explain the depth of the field; any pecking order remains editorial analysis before the race.

The other Group 1 divisions require separate form readings at their own distances: the Long Distance Cup, Sprint, Fillies & Mares and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile. Racing Post published their final fields, while the going can still change before the first race.

After rain on Friday morning, 16 October, Ascot clerk Chris Stickels described the going as good, changed from good, good to firm in places. This is the reported pre-race condition, not a guarantee for every off time. The seven-race programme closes at 16:35 with the mile Balmoral Handicap, separate from the five Group 1 races.
