Point Of Law won the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, 3 November 2026 under Ethan Brown for trainer Ciaron Maher. He covered 3,200 metres on turf in 3:21.88 according to the Hong Kong Jockey Club result, beating Zahraan by 3¾ lengths; Juja Kibo was a short head behind the runner-up in third.

Maher trained all three placed horses, a first for one trainer in the Cup’s history according to the Victoria Racing Club. This was only Point Of Law’s sixth race start; he secured his place by winning the 2,400-metre Geelong Cup on 21 October. The club’s race-day image shows the named winner.

Margins and race shape

After Royal Supremacy established a strong lead, Point Of Law sustained his move and widened the margin late. Ben Melham rode runner-up Zahraan, while Sam Clipperton completed the first three aboard Juja Kibo. The VRC report uses Zahraan for the runner-up, while some result tables render Zahrann; both refer to this edition’s second place.
