The Breeders’ Cup announced on 21 October 2026 that it had received a record 255 pre-entries for its Keeneland championships on 30–31 October. They represent 222 individual horses, including 79 international contenders, across 14 races. The two totals measure race selections and distinct horses respectively; 255 is not the number that will enter the starting gates.

The official pre-entry guide allows a horse to nominate no more than two races at this stage. One horse can therefore appear against two possible targets before its programme is settled. The difference between the two totals is 33 entries; that arithmetic explains why an early list is not a final field, but it does not identify dual-nominated horses without checking the detailed entry file.

The final-entry checkpoint

Final entries close at 10 a.m. US Eastern time on Monday 26 October, according to the championship guide. Field limits and also-eligible places apply when a race is oversubscribed. Until the final list and draw are published, each name should be described as pre-entered, not as a confirmed starter with an assigned stall.

Reading the international contingent

The organisers count 79 international contenders, second only to the 80 recorded in 2024, and list horses bred in ten countries across six continents. This establishes the breadth of the pre-entry stage. It does not measure the quality of each final field or guarantee that every travelling prospect will ship and race; veterinary checks and final connections’ decisions still matter.

A useful way to follow the next steps

A reader comparing contenders should begin with the official list for each race, then check final acceptance, the draw and any changes through race day. The guide places mandatory jog-up examinations from 25 October and final entries on 26 October. Aletaq will distinguish those verified updates from the early list; no pre-entry is a race result or a retrospective prediction.
