Breeders’ Cup puts life after racing in the spotlight
Two announced $100,000 contributions will support Thoroughbred aftercare during the Keeneland championships.
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance announced on 20 October that it will return as the official aftercare partner of the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland on 30–31 October 2026. The partnership gives horses’ transition beyond racing a place within championship weekend.
Kentucky Downs and Kentucky HBPA are scheduled to present a $100,000 contribution, with FanDuel announcing a separate contribution of the same amount. These are announced aftercare commitments, rather than race purses or funds already confirmed as received.
Friday’s programme includes the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes, and the organisation is also associated with the Juvenile. The official Breeders’ Cup schedule confirms a two-day championship at Keeneland with distinct divisions for two-year-olds and older horses.
What does accredited aftercare involve?
The alliance accredits and inspects organisations, then supports their work to retrain, retire and rehome Thoroughbreds. Its current release identifies 86 accredited organisations and approximately 175 facilities across North America. The partnership connects a major sporting platform with the organisations doing the work after a horse’s competitive career.
